During one of my visits to Peter Mark in Dundalk for my reapplication of my Rapture Tape Extensions (learn all about them here) I tested out Nioxin’s Dermabrasion Scalp Treatment to see just how healthy or unhealthy my scalp is and to give it a much needed deep clean.
As you all know, I use my ‘Hair Make Up’, to mask my thinning hair and patches. My hair make up is a combination of Keratin Hair Fibers and scalp concealing lotion which I apply twice or three times a week, after every wash.
Read about my Hair Make Up here
I have been using these products consistently for two years and began to worry about the possible damage it was doing to my scalp. I suffer from spots on my scalp from time to time, just like I do on my face, but unlike my skin, I don’t give my scalp a breather from any hair make up.
Toni, my fabulous hairstylist in Peter Mark, who knows all about my hair issues and hair make up, suggested this Nioxin treatment as a way to see if there was any side effects of using these products for so long and to give my scalp a ‘facial’.
What Is Nioxin’s Dermabrasion Scalp Treatment?
According to Nioxin’s official website it is:
An anti-aging treatment to help regenerate and revitalise scalp skin through exfoliation acting like a facial for the scalp, exclusively for in-salon use. It removes build-up on the scalp to restore it to a good condition. Helps accelerate skin surface regeneration by up to 34% compared to untreated skin.
It is suitable for coloured hair, dry scalps and for those who suffer from psoriasis or thinning hair.
If using on coloured hair it is recommended to use the week before you are due to get your colour done or the week after you get your hair freshly coloured.
The Cost
It only costs €19.90.
You basically pay for the bottle and the application costs nothing extra as this is an in salon treatment. As I wear tape extensions I do not use any scalp treatments or hair masks so as not to effect the adhesive on the tape.
If you wear ape extensions this treatment is perfect to get done every 6-8 weeks when you are getting them reapplied.
The Process
The full bottle is applied to a dry scalp and then massaged into the scalp for 1 minute. The hairdresser will then leave the treatment on the scalp for 10 minutes before rinsing well.
My hair was then washed with Nioxin’s 2 shampoo and conditioner, as it always is when I visit Peter Mark as I have ‘noticeably thinning’ hair. This gives my hair added texture to achieve more volume when blow drying.
It has a menthol aroma and you can feel your scalp beginning to breath, almost as tough was slathered in Vicks.
Before
I have my hair make up in these before photos. Both the scalp lotion and hair fibers. As you can see my scalp looks dirty as a result of the products.
Toni in Peter Mark was actually surprised to see my roots of my hair follicles were not as clogged with sebum, which is an oily secretion from the sebaceous glands as you would expect from someone who uses products such as my hair make up consistently.
MoleScope
The MoleScope is a dermoscopy attachment for smartphones, usually used to track and monitor moles for skin cancer, it can also be used to give an in-depth look into your scalps health.
Using the MoleScope on the phone, we took some before and after images of my scalp to see just how deep cleaning this treatment was.
After
As you can see the results speak for itself.
My scalp is completely clear from all my hair make up and the sebum has been cleared away from the roots of my hair follicles. It felt rejuvenated and revitalised, almost as it it had taking a much needed breath.
I had some spots on my scalp at the time of the treatment which I feel benefited and cleared up quicker (or at least less painfully) as a result of it.
It was almost a shame to put my hair make up onto my fresh clean scalp, but a balding beauty must do what she must do.
